We’re continuing to recognize and celebrate the contributions women have made and are making in our little town of Cecilton. Women who are currently working, volunteering in positions or fields that are unique to them and in this case, critical to our community.
Today, we’re recognizing Cecilton Volunteer Fire Company President Deanna Cheyney Sakers, a fourth generation CVFC volunteer. Having been elected president of the CVFC for the very first at 21 years old, she knows the importance of doing the very best for the organization, her fellow members and the community. We spoke about how humbling it was to have been elected president so young, the pressure and expectations.
“I started volunteering at 16 years old. I immediately signed up for the EMT class. Although, I didn’t complete it the first time, I received my certification at the age of 19.”
“I believe in volunteering. It’s what I do, what I know. My great grandfather was a founding member and my grandparents, dad, mom, aunts, uncles, cousins and husband have or are currently volunteering, she states.”
Still serving as the CVFC President having only taken one year off to welcome the newest addition to her family, her daughter Macie. She remains devoted. I caught up with her when most are settling in for the night with their families. She had just completed a full day’s work at Terumo Medical Corporation where she is a full time supervisor.
“I’m accustomed to working late and odd hours. Many emergencies we respond to happen when most people are sleeping.”
She began reminiscing, sharing some history of the organization, meeting minutes from the forties, Cecilton Volunteer Fire Company Carnival expense and profit sheets from the thirties, old news articles, memorabilia and pictures of her grandparents, dad, other members that have since passed and a few newer images of those currently volunteering.
“I really enjoy sharing these memories.”
Do you know how our company started?” she asked. ” A group of men came together to form this organization as the result of a local arsonist. Someone was setting fires in town, and they joined together to combat that. I can tell you their names, “she says. ” H.W. Cheyney Sr. , Raymond Fillingame, C. Rowan, Robert De Lauer, Harry Boulden, Robert Kennedy, Elmer Pierce, Harry Pierce, and George Humphrey, and that’s how this all began!”
What a rich and very important history our local fire company has. An organization that runs solely with the support of volunteers and financial contributions from community members and businesses. Thank you so much, Deanna for your commitment to our community. Our safety, health and welfare. You’re truly what makes our community great!
